The planned launch of a new NBA-backed European competition could provide a major boost to basketball in the United Kingdom.
New York Knicks star OG Anunoby, one of the most prominent British players in the NBA, believes the project could have a significant impact on the sport’s growth.
“I think it is amazing. Basketball continues to grow, especially here in London and in Manchester. It’s exciting and I think it’s going to take basketball to another level out here,” Anunoby told BBC Sport.
NBA Europe is currently scheduled to launch in October 2027, alongside the start of the 2027-28 NBA season, with plans for a 16-team European league.
London and Manchester are both expected to be among the potential host cities. The deadline for franchise bids passed in June, with the NBA hoping to begin announcing the identities of the participating teams later this year.
Reports indicate that bids ranging from $500 million to $1 billion have been submitted for some of the targeted markets.
Laura Pinnell, the NBA’s vice president and head of Consumer Group for Europe and the Middle East, said preparations for the project remain on track.

AS Monaco Basket has officially filed an appeal with the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) in an effort to be reinstated in the 2026-27 Betclic ELITE.
According to Nice-Matin, the move follows major progress in the club’s takeover project led by former NBA star Jamal Mashburn, with recent discussions also involving the Monaco government.
Monaco had announced on August 10 that it intended to appeal, but chose to use the time available until August 18 to finalize its rescue plan. The club had initially targeted August 14 to reach a breakthrough, but the latest developments prompted an earlier-than-expected filing.
The appeal comes after the DNCCG refused Monaco’s registration for the 2026-27 French top-flight season, a decision that was later upheld by the French Basketball Federation’s Appeals Chamber (FFBB).

Partizan Belgrade have completed another signing ahead of the 2026-27 season. According to Nova.rs, the Serbian club has reached an agreement with Ethan Thompson, who will leave the Indiana Pacers to sign a one-year contract with an option for a second season.
A member of the Puerto Rico national team, Thompson is a shooting guard who arrives in Europe after spending most of his professional career between the NBA and the G League.
After going undrafted, the 26-year-old earned opportunities with the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, and Orlando Magic organizations before eventually finding a role with the Indiana Pacers.
Thompson joined Indiana in December and made his NBA debut against the Cleveland Cavaliers on December 1, scoring his first NBA points in the fourth quarter.

The Lewis family, owners of Tottenham Hotspur, is exploring a bid for the future London franchise in NBA Europe, the new competition jointly created by the NBA and FIBA. If successful, it would mark the family’s first major investment outside soccer since acquiring Tottenham in 2001.
The Lewis family controls 70.12% of ENIC, Tottenham’s parent company, which owns an 87.62% stake in the Premier League club. The family’s interests are now primarily represented by Vivienne Lewis, daughter of founder Joe Lewis, and her husband Nick Beucher, co-CEO of Tavistock Group.
Joe Lewis stepped down as a person with significant control of Tottenham in 2022. In 2024 he pleaded guilty to insider trading in the United States, receiving a $5 million fine, before being granted a presidential pardon by Donald Trump the following year.
For the NBA Europe project, the Lewis family has teamed up with the Checketts and Eccles families, both well-known sports investors. David Checketts previously served as general manager of the Utah Jazz and president of the New York Knicks, while the Eccles family owns stakes in Burnley and Espanyol.
NBA Europe is expected to launch in 2027 with 12 permanent franchises and four additional clubs qualifying each season. London is one of the target markets alongside Manchester, Paris, Madrid, Berlin and Milan.

Lance Ware will continue his career in the Greek Stoiximan GBL, with Maroussi officially announcing the signing of the American center on a 1+1 contract.
The 25-year-old big man spent his first professional season with Iraklis, averaging 7.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 24 league games.
Before turning pro, Ware played three seasons at Kentucky under John Calipari, followed by stops at Villanova and UT Arlington, where he enjoyed the best campaign of his college career, averaging 13.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 58.2% from two-point range. His move to Maroussi keeps him in Greece as he looks to build on a promising rookie professional season.
