The Cairns Taipans have officially signed New Zealand wing Walter Brown to a one-year contract. The 23-year-old arrives after spending last season at UNLV before returning home to play for the Canterbury Rams.
Brown averaged 3.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists while shooting 43.7% from the field in college. Back in New Zealand, he was named the NZNBL Most Improved Player.

Head coach Adam Forde praised Brown’s mentality and versatility.
“Walter has a really strong reputation for his work ethic. He has high-level college experience and has already been part of championship-winning teams in both the NBL and NZNBL.”
“He fits exactly how we want to play. He can shoot, defend with athleticism, move well without the ball and consistently does the little things that help teams win.”
Tall Blacks international joins Cairns
Brown made his senior debut for the New Zealand Tall Blacks in 2022 during the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers and was the youngest player on the squad at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
He began his professional career with the Canterbury Rams in 2021, winning two NZNBL championships and earning Youth Player of the Year honors in 2023. He also spent three seasons as a development player with the Tasmania JackJumpers, winning the 2024 NBL championship.
In Cairns, Brown reunites with former Tasmania teammates Jack McVeigh and Brody Nunn.
