Twenty years later, the Spanish legend has celebrated La Familia’s first World Cup title

Pau Gasol has marked the 20th anniversary of Spain’s first World Cup triumph in Saitama with an emotional social media post.

A foot injury forced Gasol to miss the final against Greece, but he still joined his teammates on the bench using crutches. “I couldn’t walk, but I knew I had to be there to help and support them in any way possible,” he wrote.

“My teammates and coaches moved me with their play, their commitment and the way they supported me,” Gasol added. “I didn’t play a single minute, but it remains one of my favorite games. A memory for life.”
