Virtus Bologna continues to attract interest from international investors. On Thursday, according to reports from Repubblica and Il Resto del Carlino, an American entrepreneur from the West Coast met with Massimo Zanetti to discuss a potential investment in the club, with the possibility of a full acquisition also being considered.
As reported by Walter Fuochi on Repubblica, the Seattle-based investor, who operates in the software industry, spent several hours in Bologna to get a closer look at the Bianconeri organization. After visiting the Arcoveggio facilities alongside Zanetti, the meeting continued with the club’s ownership and executives, including CEO Comellini and vice president Sermasi.
The discussions focused on presenting Virtus’ project, its future ambitions and potential areas of development. The first meeting was described as positive, with the American businessman now expected to evaluate whether to continue talks after this initial stage. According to reports, the Seattle-based investor is currently at the top of Zanetti’s preferences, ahead of other international groups that have already shown interest in Virtus.
Among the topics discussed were the new arena planned at the Bologna Exhibition Center, which is set to become the team’s future home, and the possible development of NBA Europe. The project is contributing to growing interest from American capital in European basketball, with several investors monitoring the continent’s most established clubs.
Virtus represents one of the most attractive opportunities thanks to its history, large fan base and potential for international growth. The club’s development strategy also includes a projected investment of around €50 million over ten years, considered a key step to strengthen its position in European basketball and increase its long-term value.
However, as Eugenio Petrillo wrote in Il Resto del Carlino, one of the ownership’s main priorities is protecting Virtus’ identity and its connection with Bologna. Any agreement with new investors would need to guarantee that the club remains based in the city, ruling out the possibility of a future relocation.
The issue would reportedly be addressed through strict clauses designed to protect the team’s location. The goal is to open the club’s capital structure and increase its ambitions while preserving the historic bond between Virtus and Bologna.
