Xavier Cooks opts out of deal with Sydney Kings

Australian forward Xavier Cooks has decided to opt out of his deal with the Sydney Kings, the team announced.

In light of the recent agreement between the NBL and the Australian Basketball Players’ Association which saw pay cuts of up to 50 percent for the 2020-21 season, a deadline of May 4 was set for players to declare their intention to explore opportunities outside of the NBL.

The Kings will still hold Cooks’ rights should he choose to return to the NBL.

Mike Batiste dismisses Panathinaikos head coach rumors, wants to stay with Orlando Magic

In an interview with Greek radio ERA Sport, former Panathinaikos legend Mike Batiste has dismissed the rumor linking to a return to his former team as coach, stating his intention to fulfil his contract as part of Orlando Magic coaching staff.

“No one has contacted me, these are rumours. I have a two-year contract and I will honor it, when I’m done with that I don’t know what will happen. But I’m fine where I am now, next to people I haven’t been t for 13-14 years”, Batiste said.

Levallois considering Simone Pianigiani, Vincent Collet for head coaching job

French Jeep Elite side Levallois Boulogne is considering Simone Pianigiani and Vincent Collet for the head coaching job, a source told Sportando.

Pianigiani’s 8-year EuroLeague experience includes coaching stints with Siena, Fenerbahce, and Olimpia Milano.

Collet, the current head coach of the French national team, recently parted ways with SIG Strasbourg after a 9-year tenure.

Alexey Shved says he wants to play at least 5-6 more years

Khimki Moscow Region guard Alexey Shved told how he spends his time in quarantine:

How long have you been home because of quarantine? How has your daily routine changed?
Now most of the time we stay at home and try to get out as little as possible. It all started when all
the VTB and Euroleague matches were suspended, from there I started to come out less and less.
Every now and then I take the dog for a walk near the house or I go to the shops near the house.

Do you miss basketball?
Of course I miss it. Now in the world there is such a situation that it is better to stay at home.
Quarantine will pass and everyone will return to normal life to work. Now the most important thing
is to stay as little as possible on the street and try not to get sick.

If it were possible to change something in your career, what would you change?
I never thought about it, because nothing can be changed. I love everything that’s happening and it’s
happened in my career.

If you weren’t a basketball player, what profession would you choose?
In fact I do not know, when I moved to Moscow from Belgorod and started playing professionally I
thought only about basketball.

Playing in the NBA was your childhood dream, it came true. Can you say you live without a
dream now? Or do you have another one?
Every basketball player dreams of playing in the NBA, I’m glad I did. I don’t want to talk about
‘dreams’, you have to set goals that you want to get close to and everything has to be done in order
to reach them.

What would you like to learn?
Now I don’t have time to learn new things. Maybe I will after my career.

Basketball has given you everything you have now. What are you going to do after your career
ends?
Most likely, not basketball gave me everything, but my parents. My family helped me and it was
always there. Wife, sisters and brothers, all this is to their credit.

If you could have dinner with someone present or past, who would you choose?
Anyone, Julius Caesar, Stalin or Gagarin, but, I could list many more.

Did you become a star when the first successes occurred?
No, you always have to stay yourself. You didn’t always play somewhere, before you became
someone I had to go a long way with a lot of people. We must never forget what we went through,
who we were and what we became.

How many years would you like to play professionally?
Another 5 or 6 years for sure

How did you accept the postponement of the Olympics? Japan is one of your favorite states, you
were there last summer. What did you like the most?
I loved Japan. When there is a chance, I would like to go there for a few weeks to visit the country. I
like the culture, the food and the relationships between Japanese people

Efes coach Ergin Ataman advocates for a ‘Euroleague Salary Cap’

In an interview with ERA Sport, Anadolu Efes Istanbul coach Ergin Ataman has advocated for a possible Euroleague salary cap in response to the economic crisis that will be caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

“All teams will be affected, we should all learn from this. Budgets should be balanced in regard to the profits, EuroLeague has to find a way to reach an even balance with a salary cap. It’s not possible for some teams to have such huge budgets, especially since this pandemic will impact everyone’s finances”, Ataman said, while also denying the entity of Shane Larkin contract renewal: “Those numbers are not true. Efes management was close to reaching a deal, but I don’t know if he has signed yet”.

Valencia increases its chances to host ACB final phase

According to Rac 1’s Marc Mundet, the city of Valencia is seeing increasing chances to host the eventual ACB final phase, via a 12-team tournament.

Besides La Fonteta, a key role could be played by Valencia Basket’s facilities L’Alqueria, with a number of courts that could hypothetically allow players of a single team to train individually.

Bryce Cotton opts out of deal with Perth Wildcats

Three-time championship-winning guard Bryce Cotton has exercised his right under the NBL and the Australian Basketball Players’ Association’s collective bargaining agreement to opt out of his contract with the Perth Wildcats.

The agreement saw players taking pay cuts of up to 50 per cent for the 2020/21 season, but allowed them until 4 May to opt out of their existing contracts.

The Perth Wildcats made every effort to assist Cotton through this difficult time, and presented him with options to provide he and his family with long term security and keep him in WA.

Cotton thanked Wildcats fans in a statement on social media.

“I truly want to thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for showing me so much love and support in my three-and-a-half seasons with the Wildcats,” he wrote.

“I can’t put into words what it has meant to me.”

The Perth Wildcats are extremely disappointed to lose the NBL’s best player.

Cotton departs as a three-time champion, two-time NBL MVP, two-time Grand Final MVP and three-time Gordon Ellis Medallist.

He played 110 games for Perth after joining the team in January 2017.

The American had one-season remaining on his three-year contract with the Wildcats.

Timofey Mozgov likely to remain with Khimki next season, sports director says

Pavel Astakhov, sports director of Khimki Moscow, said that Timofey Mozgov will likely remain with the Russian team next season.
The former NBA champion has not played this season because he was recovering from an injury but he was ready to go when the season was suspended.

“We know that he has done serious work since the start of the season in seven months. There are good chances that he will be able to play the next season completely. We have complete information on his health. If everything is fine, then most likely he will remain in our team” Ashtakov told Mosregtoday.

Balkan extend Kris Minkov

Balkan extended the contract to one of its main players. Kris Minkov will remain at the club until 2022.

Last season he recorded 11 ppg and 3.3 rpg in 31 games.

Bulgarian Basketball Federation decided to terminate National Basketball League Championship for 2019/20, not to determine the final standings, champion, and relegation to the NBL.

Shved to be free agent for first time in a while, keeps options about his future open

Russian star Alexey Shved will become free agent this summer for the first time in a while when his contract with Khimki Moscow expires.

Shved, one of the top scorers in Europe and one of the best players in VTB League, has been with the Russian powerhouse since 2016 when he returned from a three-year stint in the NBA.

This season he was averaging 21.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 6.2 assists in EuroLeague and 22.4 points, 3 rebounds and 9.2 assists in VTB League.

“This is the first time since years that Alexey Shved will be free agent” his agent Obrad Fimic told Sportando. “Shved is a star of Khimki and one of the best players in VTB. Before Covid-19 pandemic we were negotiating a new contract with Khimki. They expressed their desire to keep him while Alexey feels at home there. But also two EuroLeague teams outside Russia are showing strong interest and Alexey also wants to see what interest he can get from the NBA” Fimic added. “We are waiting for the situation to calm down in the world, and than we are going to make decision where Alexey will continue his career”.

Shved has played three seasons in the NBA between 2012 and 2015 averaging 7.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 182 games with Timberwolves, 76ers, Knicks and Rockets.

Chorale Roanne extends coach Jean-Denys Choulet until 2022

The Roanne Basket Choir has reached an agreement with Jean-Denys Choulet to extend his contract as coach of the team until 2022.
“This is my home!” said Jean-Denys Choulet when talking about his contract extension. “We haven’t finished the mission: I really want to give new life to this club, to do everything to restructure it at a sporting level. There is a huge job to do, but we are fortunate that the club is well managed financially”.
