As reported yesterday, Kai Jones has been invited to the Kaseya Center for a workout with the Miami Heat.
The big man — who, according to some rumors, has a verbal agreement with Virtus Bologna — will remain in Florida at least through Thursday, per Barry Jackson.
Jackson wrote:
“Kai Jones is spending four days working out at Kaseya Center this week as the Heat evaluates whether to sign the veteran power forward/center. One involved source said the Heat long has shown an appreciation for Jones’ skill set but is merely “kicking the tires” to see if signing him would be something worth considering”
The former Texas standout is hoping for another shot in the NBA, and the Heat would indeed be an ideal landing spot given their long track record of reviving careers of undrafted players and former first-round picks under Erik Spoelstra’s guidance.
However, the team’s current salary situation could pose a hurdle. Miami has 14 standard NBA contracts totaling approximately $189.2 million — about $1.6 million above the Luxury Tax threshold. That’s a relatively small gap that could be cleared by moving any player before the trade deadline, but the figure would rise further with another signing.
According to several team reporters, the front office plans to carefully evaluate all options before adding a 15th player to the roster.
With four years of NBA experience, Jones is no longer eligible for a Two-Way contract.
