FIBA Europe Board presented with current state of affairs in March meeting

The session was chaired by FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel, while in attendance were also FIBA President Hamane Niang; FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis and FIBA Europe Secretary General/FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak. 

The 12th Meeting of the FIBA Europe Board term of office 2019-2023 took place via videoconference on Friday, March 19, 2021.

The session was chaired by FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel, while in attendance were also FIBA President Hamane Niang; FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis and FIBA Europe Secretary General/FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak.

Among the plethora of items in the meeting, the Board members discussed and confirmed that the final decision on the organization and format of the 2021 men’s and women’s FIBA European Championships for Small Countries and Youth Competitions will be taken in the May Board meeting, following discussion in the Medical, Youth and Competitions Commissions and feedback from National Federations and the host cities.

The Board was also presented with:

  • Extensive reporting about the successful conclusion of the recent Qualifiers for both FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2021 and FIBA EuroBasket 2022 which decided the roster of teams for the Final Round tournaments.
  • Numbers about the impressive growth of digital engagement of Euroleague Women, following its rebranding and the upgrade of production standards and despite the significantly shortened season, compared to previous editions.
  • A review of the state of play for all club competitions under the auspices of FIBA Europe, which are played in hubs for the current season.
    A report on the current Basketball Champions League 2020-2021 season.
  • Updates on the bidding process for the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023 and the FIBA EuroBasket 2025.
  • The financial statements of FIBA Europe as of end of 2020, which it approved.

The Board also confirmed the postponement of the 2021 General Assembly of FIBA Europe to October 2, 2021. The event is set to be organized in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
