After an intense summer that included his battle with health issues and Germany’s European Championship triumph, Alex Mumbru is ready to begin a new season on the Virtus Bologna bench.
The Spanish coach, now fully recovered, attended the Italy-Serbia game at Vitrifrigo Arena in Pesaro and spoke briefly with Meridian Sport. The main topic was David Kramer, whom Mumbru coaches with the German national team and who recently joined Crvena Zvezda.
Mumbru: “I’m doing well and, most importantly, I’m happy”
“I’m doing well and, most importantly, I’m happy! I was with the national team and now I’m with Virtus, where I’m starting a new season. I’m enjoying it,” Mumbru said.
He then discussed Kramer’s move to Belgrade.
“Crvena Zvezda have built a very good roster, with good chances in the EuroLeague. David is a player with a serious reputation who came from Real Madrid. He is a very important player for the national team – an exceptional shooter who also knows how to play high-level defense. I’m sure he is a very good addition for Zvezda.”
“Kramer wanted to play more”
According to Mumbru, Kramer’s decision to leave Madrid was mainly motivated by his desire for a bigger role.
“He didn’t have many minutes at Real because he had Sergio Llull, Theo Maledon… around him. He certainly wanted to play more and eventually decided to join a team that could offer him a bigger role. There is no doubt he will be important, and I’m convinced he can have a very good season at Zvezda.”
The Virtus coach also believes Kramer could become an X factor for the Serbian club.
“Why shouldn’t he be the X factor?! I think he’s a very good player. Ibon knows him extremely well, as does assistant coach Alberto Navarro, so I’m sure they will get the best out of David.”
“Jokic is one of the best players on the planet”
Mumbru also discussed Nikola Jokic, whom Germany faced last summer.
“We played against him last summer, so I know him very well. He’s a very, very good player. What can I say about him?! A center who is also a point guard… He’s probably the key player for Serbia. He is one of the best players on the planet.”
The new Virtus: “We want to build for the future”
Mumbru also discussed his new adventure in Bologna, where he replaced Nenad Jakovljević.
“As you know, we have a very young team, and we play in one of the oldest leagues in Europe. But we want to do our own thing and be a team for the future, not just for this season, but for what comes next. We want to play good basketball, and now is the right time to make good decisions.”
Finally, Mumbru looked at Germany’s path toward the next World Cup.
“As far as Germany is concerned, we’re currently in a good situation, especially after beating Poland. We played very well and I hope we can continue on that path,” Mumbru concluded to Meridian Sport.
