FIBA aligns with IOC decisions, lifts restrictions on Russian and Belarusian individuals

The federation will allow Russian and Belarusian players and officials to participate in all FIBA competitions with immediate effect. A decision on the reintegration of national teams is expected in December 2026.

Immediate return for players and officials

Following the recent decisions by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to lift its recommended restrictions on Belarusian athletes and teams and to provisionally lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, the FIBA Executive Committee has confirmed its alignment with the IOC position.

FIBA has decided to lift restrictions on all Russian and Belarusian individual participants, including players, coaches, referees, commissioners and other officials in both basketball and 3×3 basketball.

Russian and Belarusian players can therefore participate in all FIBA competitions with immediate effect, while officials from the two countries can be nominated for FIBA competitions.

National teams to be addressed in December

The situation regarding Russian and Belarusian national teams will be handled separately.

FIBA will work closely with the IOC, ASOIF and other Olympic team sports federations to address the logistical and player safety issues surrounding their potential reintegration on the Road to LA28, as well as in international national team and club competitions across all age categories and in both FIBA Olympic disciplines.

Concrete decisions regarding the participation of national teams, including the implementation of an adequate anti-doping program, will be taken at the next FIBA Central Board meeting in December 2026.
