Serbian outlet Mozzart Sport has reported Dejan Bodiroga’s latest comments on the present and future of the EuroLeague, made to Radar Forum.
“The EuroLeague has never been stronger than it is today. We are growing and progressing according to plan,” the EuroLeague Basketball president said.
“I’ll give you a brief overview of the competition’s current situation, focusing on a few key figures. Last year, more than 3.3 million fans attended our games, while over 500 million people watched them on television throughout the season. That’s an all-time high.
“We have also seen significant growth and reached new records on social media. The number of sponsors, partners and fans is increasing as well. All the numbers show that the EuroLeague is in a positive position. That was one of the reasons we met in Italy last week to discuss the competition’s future. It was a positive and important meeting, where we discussed the next steps.”
“Expansion and the introduction of franchises are on the agenda. Starting next season, we will move from the current 20-team format, in which every team plays every other team, to 24 teams, with what will essentially be two conferences. We have not yet determined the criteria for forming them.
“Franchises are also coming. We have received numerous expressions of interest and several offers, both from EuroCup teams and from clubs outside the competition. They have submitted binding offers, expressing their desire to become EuroLeague members in the future.
“Crvena Zvezda and Partizan are naturally among them. I believe both clubs are held in high regard by our board. Given the process, their involvement and the requirements they need to meet, I think they have a very good chance of joining the EuroLeague. Simply put, I see them as long-term partners of the competition.”
As for NBA Europe, there was nothing new to report.
