EuroLeague, 13 shareholder clubs move toward franchise transformation

The ECA shareholder clubs have agreed to begin the process of converting their current 10-year licenses into franchises while continuing the league’s expansion process.

13 clubs move toward a franchise model

The Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA) shareholder clubs met Tuesday, October 6, in Cernobbio, Italy, to discuss key strategic decisions regarding the future of their collective property.

Euroleague Basketball President Dejan Bodiroga welcomed the club representatives and highlighted the work carried out over the past decades, which has driven significant growth for European club basketball.

Euroleague Basketball CEO Chus Bueno then provided an update on the approved strategic roadmap and the 10-year business plan.

10-year licenses to be converted into franchises

The attending club owners agreed to move forward with the process of converting the current 10-year licenses into franchises for the 13 ECA shareholder clubs:

Anadolu Efes Istanbul, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, CSKA Moscow, Armani Olimpia Milan, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich, Fenerbahce Istanbul, LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Olympiacos Piraeus, Panathinaikos Athens, Real Madrid and Zalgiris Kaunas.

The franchise transformation is one of the key elements of EuroLeague’s strategic plans for the future of the competition.

EuroLeague continues expansion process

The clubs also agreed to continue the process of expanding the number of franchises in the competition.

The Board of Directors was appointed to continue reviewing the expansion opportunities, following multiple binding offers received from leading professional clubs.

The Board will present a final recommendation for approval in the coming weeks.
