The Boston Celtics have kicked off their offseason by trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Anfernee Simons and two future second-round picks.
According to Shams Charania, the Celtics are expected to remain active on the market, with talks ongoing involving the potential departure of “several key players” from the current roster.
Following the serious injury to Jayson Tatum, Boston has opted to significantly reduce its massive projected luxury tax bill, which has now dropped to around $200 million after last night’s trade.
The main trade candidates are Kristaps Porzingis — who is on an expiring $30.7 million contract — and Sam Hauser, who is set to earn $10 million in 2025–26, the first year of a four-year, $45 million deal.
Boston remains roughly $18 million over the second apron, but clearing that amount won’t be easy.
The Brooklyn Nets currently stand as the only team with the cap space to absorb one or more contracts without needing to match salaries, putting them in a strong negotiating position should the 2024 NBA champions come calling.
As for the Trail Blazers, it may be wise to wait and see what their next move is before drawing conclusions.
The Oregon franchise has several expiring contracts and up to four first-round picks it could move. Logic would suggest they continue with their current core and use Holiday as a veteran leader for their young roster.
But if every NBA team followed logic, the offseason wouldn’t be nearly as exciting….
