EuroLeague-NBA talks, Gazzetta: First offer rejected, but negotiations remain open

The owners of EuroLeague’s 13 shareholder clubs deemed the NBA’s takeover proposal unsatisfactory, while pausing their expansion plans to keep negotiations alive.

EuroLeague has rejected the NBA’s initial offer to acquire the competition, but talks between the two sides are set to continue. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, this was the outcome of a meeting held at Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, where the owners of EuroLeague’s 13 shareholder clubs gathered to discuss the future of European basketball.

The American league’s proposal, which expired on October 6, was considered financially unsatisfactory. However, the clubs agreed to pause EuroLeague’s expansion plan from 20 to 24 teams, which included turning several clubs into permanent franchises. The move addresses one of the NBA’s conditions for keeping negotiations open.

The NBA plans to launch its own 16-team European competition next season, with 12 permanent members and two potential Italian locations, Rome and Milan. Following the initial exchange of proposals, the two sides are now moving towards more substantive negotiations, with further discussions needed to reconcile their competing plans for the future of European basketball.
