At the San Antonio Spurs Media Day, Victor Wembanyama spoke with great maturity about dealing with the disappointment of last season’s NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks and his team’s huge ambitions for the upcoming season.
“I don’t want to hide anything. I’ve had nights when it was difficult even to fall asleep. Strong emotions, sometimes tormented emotions. But there comes a point when you accept that you have to go through them and experience them all if you want to reach the top.
Honestly, I couldn’t imagine a better motivation [than losing in the Finals]. Now we have to face the reality that we have to play more than 100 games to get back there. We’re ready, very confident and ambitious.”
Wembanyama certainly did not take it easy during the offseason, between commitments with the French national team, a mini-camp organized in Nanterre with some of his Spurs teammates, and a stint training with a rugby team.
“Being together this summer was fantastic. Especially the time in France, which was really touching and emotional for me.”
Wembanyama also addressed the Spurs’ ambitions and the growing hostility from opposing fans.
“We feel like this is our place. We’re fighting to get to the top of the mountain, and we’ll have to move the obstacles we find along the way. That’s just how things go.
[On opposing fans booing him] I take it as a great sign of respect. Fans love you when you play for them and hate you when you’re a rival. That’s their way of embracing competitiveness. I really have nothing against it.”
