Women’s basketball has a rich history that started with strict rules and college games and lead to NBA superstars with million-dollar salaries and advertisement contracts. Female athletes are dedicated, skilled, goal-oriented, and inspiring, so we want to tell you about some of the most prominent women in basketball. They are so popular that almost any fast payout online casino in NZ with a sportsbook accepts wagers on female basketball!

Carol Blazejowski

Carol is probably the most popular and highest-ranked female basketball player. She is from Elizabeth, New Jersey and started playing at an early age. Blazejowski was the first in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 and scored 40 points during each game. She was also the leading scorer when in 1979 the US national team won the world championship.

Lisa Leslie

Some of our readers might not know but Grace Tennet, the content creator at NZ CasinoHEX loves basketball. And it is not rare to hear from her that Lisa Leslie is a role model not only for female basketball players. This legendary athlete hails from California and has played 11 great seasons for L.A. Sparks. Her fast moves and striking finishes were a nightmare for defenders. Lisa Leslie ranks second on the list of the best women’s basketball players in the world and has several WNBA records.

Maya Moore

Another American basketball player on our list is Maya Moore who played for the Minnesota Lynx. Many people name her the most prominent player of all time and even Sports Illustrated called her the greatest of our era. Throughout her career, Maya has won almost every possible award – from NCAA to the Olympic games. She was named the 2006 and 2007 Player of the Year by Naismith but took an unexpected break from basketball in 2018.

Diana Taurasi

Diana Taurasi is a point guard at Phoenix Mercury, a member of the WNBA. During her career, Taurasi has played in more than 450 games and was featured in the All-WNBA squad 13 times.

Tamika Catchings

Tamika was born in 1979 in Stratford, New Jersey and is the daughter of Harvey Catchings who played in the NBA from 1974 to 1985. She is a retired basketball player who dedicated her best years to Indiana Fever. In 2022, Tamika occupied her place in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. When it comes to overall career statistics, Catchings has one of the highest ranks worldwide. She participated in the All-WNBA squads 12 times and played in 15 seasons. Moreover, Tamika is the only player to record 1,000 steals.

Lauren Jackson

The last name on our list but not less inspiring is Lauren Jackson. She is an Australian athlete considered one of the highest-ranked international basketball players of all time. Lauren has played for Seattle Storm for 12 seasons during which has won the Champion twice and was named the WNBA MVP three times. In 2022, she was included in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

How it all began

The story of women’s basketball began in 1891 with the creation of the first female team. Senda Berenson, a physical education teacher from the Smith College for Girls used basketball as a way to promote sports among women. Her classes were so popular that already in 1892, the first basketball game was played.

During those times, women were considered more selfish than men. Senda has modified the classical rules and aimed to teach girls to cooperate and play together, and not just to compete and win. There were nine players in zones on each court and they couldn’t leave those zones or run more than five feet before shooting or making a pass.

Women in basketball change the rules

For many years, women in sports stayed in the shadow of men but the situation has finally changed and there is a big number of female athletes who are as strong and skilled as men (or even better). We offer you to follow the achievements of Moore, Taurasi, and other players discussed in this article to make sure of that.
