RedBird has submitted a binding offer to the NBA to secure control of the Milan franchise in the future NBA Europe league, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. The fund led by Gerry Cardinale is currently considered to be in a leading position compared to other competitors, including Oaktree.
The plan would involve a partnership with Pallacanestro Varese to create a new team, with an as-yet-undecided name, and participation in the Italian league as a requirement for joining the European competition. The team would play its domestic Serie A home games in Varese, while for NBA Europe fixtures it would move to a new arena planned in San Donato.
The project is highly ambitious and involves significant investment, both for entry into the league (estimated between 250 and 500 million euros) and for the construction of the arena (around 400 million euros). However, several key issues remain unresolved, including the structure of the league and Milan’s role within the NBA Europe project.
