North Carolina will be without freshman star Caleb Wilson for the rest of the season after he fractured his right thumb while dunking during Thursday’s practice. The school announced the injury Friday, and sources told ESPN that Wilson has already undergone surgery.
The setback compounds an already difficult stretch: Wilson had missed the previous six games with a fractured left hand suffered on Feb. 10 at Miami and was considered close to returning before Thursday’s injury.
Wilson was averaging 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds, and UNC went 5-1 without him. The Tar Heels are locked into the No. 4 seed for next week’s ACC tournament and finish the regular season Saturday at No. 1 Duke.
Wilson is expected to be cleared in time for the NBA pre-draft process, where he projects as a potential top-5 pick.
