Kings coach Christie on Sabonis’ limited minutes: “Not injury management, it’s decision-based”

Sacramento say the 20–21 minutes in Sabonis’ first games back are tied to game flow and a conditioning/rhythm process after a two-month layoff

Doug Christie addressed why Domantas Sabonis has come off the bench and played limited minutes after missing two months with a knee injury. Ahead of Sacramento’s 130-117 loss to the Miami Heat, Christie said Sabonis is still working through the process of regaining rhythm and the shape he wants.

“It’s a process,” Christie said, noting the team is monitoring key stretches to meet its standard and prioritize winning possessions late or in specific moments.

Christie added there is no minutes restriction, calling it “decision-based” and dependent on who is providing energy and playing well in front of him. In three games since returning, Sabonis is averaging 19.3 minutes with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 3.3 assists, versus his season marks of 15.4 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 30 minutes; the Kings sit 14th in the West at 12–32.
