Victor Wembanyama: “It’s sad to see some players promote sports betting company”

The San Antonio Spurs star ruled out any partnership with sportsbooks and criticized fellow NBA players who promote gambling platforms: “I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it.”

Wembanyama rules out betting sponsorships

Victor Wembanyama has no intention of partnering with sports betting companies. The San Antonio Spurs center was unequivocal when asked after Thursday’s training camp workout whether he would consider a deal with a sportsbook.

“Absolutely not,” Wembanyama said. “I will never do that. Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

“It’s not about money anymore”

As his profile has grown, Wembanyama’s approach to sponsorships has also evolved. While financial considerations once played a role in his decisions, he now prioritizes whether potential partnerships align with his personal values.

“In the past, there was a dimension of money,” he said. “Not anymore.”

The French star also revealed that he has turned down offers worth considerably more than the endorsement deals he eventually accepted because he was uncomfortable with the products or services he would have been promoting.

“Obviously, we earn millions and millions. This is not our biggest strength. Our biggest strength is inspiring. I want to inspire in a good way. That’s the strongest thing I can do.”

LeBron James, Kevin Durant and other NBA stars have betting partnerships

Wembanyama’s stance contrasts with that of several prominent NBA players who have established relationships with sportsbooks or prediction-market companies.

In September, LeBron James announced a partnership with Polymarket after previously working with DraftKings. Kevin Durant has an endorsement deal with FanDuel and is also an investor in Kalshi, while Giannis Antetokounmpo announced earlier this year that he had become a Kalshi shareholder.

Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic has served as an ambassador for Superbet in Serbia since 2023.

NBA players are allowed to endorse sports betting companies under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, subject to certain restrictions. They cannot promote wagers on NBA-related markets, but they can enter broader endorsement arrangements and hold limited investments in gambling companies.

Wembanyama stands by his principles after a breakout season

The French center is entering his fourth NBA season after helping the San Antonio Spurs reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014.

Last season, he was unanimously named Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocked shots for the third consecutive year. He also finished third in MVP voting.

Despite his growing profile, Wembanyama made it clear that his position on endorsements will not change.

“I want to promote things that have a good impact, have a good influence with who I can share messages and values,” he said.
