In the second part of his lengthy interview with EuroInsiders, Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos also discussed the idea of bringing a superstar like Nikola Jokic to Greece.
“Actually, the player I would have wanted to sign, but who has stopped playing basketball, is Milos Teodosic. I believe that after Sarunas Jasikevicius, he was the smartest player on the court and, after Diamantidis, the most talented.”
Giannakopoulos then revealed his dream signing for the future:
“And that is my dream. I will sign him next season. But where would he play? We have Lessort, Yabusele and Fall. How could he fit in? It’s Nikola Jokic, the best player in the world.”
The Panathinaikos owner then explained that he has already tried to bring the Serbian superstar to Athens, contacting both the player and the Denver Nuggets:
“I saw that he could sign the richest contract in NBA history. Ask Misko Raznatovic if I’m serious. I made an offer to both him and the team. But they rejected me. I know he still has one year left on his contract.”
Giannakopoulos added:
“When I asked, he had a specific contract and I tried to get the buyout for the final year. When they heard I was calling from Greece, they closed the door. Let’s wait until next year…”
Jokic is currently under contract with the Nuggets for two more seasons, with the final year being a player option, for approximately $121 million in total. Needless to say, a potential move to the EuroLeague would be one of the biggest signings in the history of European basketball.
