The teams participating in the FIBA European Youth Championships and the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries 2022 found out their opponents for the upcoming events during Tuesday’s draws in Freising, Germany.

A total of 254 teams will compete in the 16 youth tournaments, which will be played across three age categories and three divisions, while the Small Countries events will be contested by a further 11 teams.

Tuesday’s draws were attended by FIBA Executive Director Kamil Novak, FIBA Europe Vice President Carmen Tocala, as well as the representatives of the member federations.

“All of our activities and competitions were impacted by the pandemic but last year we saw an improvement with the FIBA Youth European Challengers, and today we’re pleased to be here for the FIBA Youth European Championship draws – and we have a strong belief that this summer’s events will go ahead as usual,” said Mr. Novak.

“Following the pandemic, not only basketball but the whole world of sports is concerned about the youth and I hope that we all will make it happen for the young generation of players.”

The summer events in Europe will tip off with the men’s and women’s FIBA European Championships for Small Countries, set to take place from June 28 to July 3, in Ta’ Qali, Malta and Nicosia, Cyprus respectively.

The FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship in Sopron, Hungary will get the youth events underway on July 8, with the tournaments in other age groups and categories continuing all the way until August 27.
