Davis Bertans has announced his retirement from the Latvian national team, the Latvian Basketball Federation confirmed.
Last autumn, his brother Dairis, who now serves as the national team’s sporting director, also brought his international career to an end.
The current Dubai Basketball forward shared an emotional farewell message on social media:
“Thank you for an amazing 15 years! It has been exactly 15 years since my first official game with the Latvian senior national team. The time has come to listen to my body and, although it’s a difficult decision, I look back with immense joy and pride for everything I experienced during these 15 years. The time has come to end my national team career.
It hurts a little that we didn’t finish my last game with a victory, but I believe we shared incredible moments together, both in front of our home fans and in tournaments abroad, including the EuroBasket and the FIBA World Cup. Those memories will stay with us forever.
I sincerely hope that Latvian basketball is in a much better place today than it was when I played my first game for the national team. From now on, I will be one of its biggest supporters. I will always cheer for the team and, whenever I have the chance, I’ll be in the stands supporting the guys.
Thank you all for your incredible support, for standing by us through victories and defeats, for celebrating the great moments with us and for sharing the difficult ones as well. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
