The Cleveland Cavaliers are still actively exploring a trade involving Max Strus, according to Marc Stein.
The Cavaliers’ priority is to move the final year of Strus’ contract, worth $16.7 million, in order to create additional financial flexibility.
Cleveland wants room for Watson or Kuminga
Clearing Strus’ contract would give the Cavaliers more room to pursue two free-agent forwards: Peyton Watson, who is a restricted free agent, and Jonathan Kuminga, who is an unrestricted free agent.
The move would be the latest step in Cleveland’s attempt to reshape its roster and improve its financial flexibility.
Dennis Schröder already traded to Charlotte
The Cavaliers have already made one significant move in that direction, trading Dennis Schröder to the Charlotte Hornets for Tre Mann on Friday.
However, Cleveland is apparently not finished and continues to explore options involving Strus.
James Harden expected to re-sign
Sources also told Stein that the Cavaliers are expected to re-sign James Harden to a multi-year contract extension “soon-ish.”
With Harden’s future apparently set to remain in Cleveland, the Cavaliers are now working on the financial moves necessary to potentially add another significant piece to the roster.
