For Jayson Tatum, this was never going to be an ordinary game. The Boston Celtics star returned to Madison Square Garden, the place where he suffered what he called the “lowest point” of his life when he tore his Achilles tendon against the New York Knicks during last year’s playoffs.

On the floor, Tatum posted 24 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists in 40 minutes in a 112-106 loss, but the most important part was elsewhere: he walked off the court without any physical issue. Tatum admitted he was nervous and emotional before the game, saying his main goal was simply to leave the floor on his own two feet.

His comeback is a major boost for Boston, who are closing in on the No. 2 seed in the East and are once again seen as serious Finals contenders. But beyond the score, this night in New York was above all a personal and symbolic milestone for Tatum.
