The Australian NBL is considering experimental rule changes designed to increase entertainment and attract new audiences. According to the Melbourne Herald Sun, the proposals include awarding three points for dunks and four points for shots made from the halfcourt logo.
The league reportedly planned to test some of the concepts during the preseason Blitz in Bendigo but did not have enough time to obtain FIBA approval. Basketball Australia initially endorsed the changes before determining that authorization from basketball’s international governing body was required.
The NBL is also considering a 30-second timeout that could only be called by the player in possession. Only the five players on the court would be allowed to participate, with coaches and bench players excluded and no substitutions permitted.
