Rick Pitino explained how he tried to shake up St. John’s after the Rutgers game, criticizing his players for their lack of collective spirit. The message appears to have paid off, as shown by the team’s performance against Texas in an exhibition game.
“I was on them pretty strong for about four or five days. All individuals, collectively, we were not a team. I said that there’s only one member of this basketball team that understands what team is all about, and that’s Quinn Ellis. The rest of you guys don’t have a clue; all you want to do is score. So that sounded pretty hot,” Pitino said.
The coach then praised his team’s response: “Tonight, they got to message me. It was very, very unselfish, moving the basketball well.” Pitino’s comments highlighted the importance of ball movement and putting the team ahead of individual scoring ambitions.
