Vangelis Liolios, president of the Greek Basketball Federation, was arrested on Wednesday, October 21 following a warrant issued as part of an investigation by the sports prosecutor. According to SPORT24, two other people were also arrested among the six individuals targeted by warrants.
The investigation, which lasted around three months, concerns alleged bribery and corruption under sports law. Authorities are reportedly looking into a suspected match-fixing case involving Greece’s top division and other leagues over at least the past five years.
The case file is also said to include complaints from basketball officials, while significant amounts of money were reportedly found during home searches and considered inconsistent with the financial profiles of those involved. The arrested individuals could appear before an investigating judge as early as the coming hours.
