Zalgiris steps up late to beat Crvena Zvezda

Down by 9 with 9 minutes to go, Lithuanian side rallied to a 79-74 win in Kaunas, to stay undefeated after two rounds

Zalgiris Kaunas remains undefeated in the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season after downing Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade 78-74 in front of a sellout crowd at Zalgirio Arena. Zalgiris improved to 2-0 in the standings, while Zvezda dropped to 1-1.

Rolands Smits led the winners with 18 points. Edgaras Ulanovas added 15 while Arnas Butkevicius had 12 for Zalgiris, which finished the game with just 8 turnovers. Luka Mitrovic paced Zvezda with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Milos Teodosic had 15 points for the guests, who outrebounded Zalgiris 34-41, pulling down 20 offensive boards.

Ulanovas and Smits allowed Zalgiris to get an early double-digit lead, 17-7. Zvezda rallied late in the first quarter and took an 8-point lead, 30-38, near halftime. Zvezda seemed to have the game under control, 54-63, early in the fourth quarter, but Brady Manek, Ulanovas and an outstanding Butkevicius fueled an 18-3 run that put Zalgiris ahead for good, 72-66. Ulanovas and Butkevicius then took care of business down the stretch.
