The Zalgiris Kaunas sporting director is calling for stronger protection for clubs against approaches to players who remain under contract.

Zalgiris Kaunas sporting director Gediminas Navickas believes the EuroLeague needs clearer transfer rules. He pointed to the Thomas Walkup-Dubai Basketball saga and Panathinaikos’ interest in Nigel Williams-Goss as recent examples. “We do see a threat. The facts showed that, and the interest from Panathinaikos was definitely there,” Navickas said.

Zalgiris ultimately kept Williams-Goss, who was considered a key part of the team. “We never considered or even named a price for which we could sell Nigel because he is an important part of the team.”

Navickas believes the issue requires broader action across the league. “We are raising this issue and will continue to do so, because we see that the process is becoming a little uncontrollable,” he added.
