The Trail Blazers have decided to take a chance on Ja Morant after acquiring him for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray.
Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports believes Portland is betting on the return of the player who once looked like a future face of the NBA.
Morant is coming off a difficult season, but he showed signs of recovery late in the year, averaging 28.5 points per 36 minutes on 58.7% true shooting over his final eight appearances.
Portland’s gamble is to pair him with Deni Avdija, Jrue Holiday, Damian Lillard and the team’s younger core. Questions remain about shooting, defense and overall offensive fit, especially when it comes to spacing. “Maybe Ja still has a few prime seasons left in him,” O’Connor writes. “Or maybe Morant shoots Portland in the foot.” The upside is clear, but so is the risk.
