By inserting rookie Will Riley into the starting lineup in place of the injured Khris Middleton, the Washington Wizards opened their game against the Charlotte Hornets with the youngest starting five in NBA history.
The Illinois swingman joined fellow rookie Tre Johnson, center Alex Sarr, and wings Kyshawn George and Bub Carrington in the opening unit. The lineup had an average age of 20.64 years, breaking the previous record held by the Oklahoma City Thunder, who averaged 20.74 years during the 2020–21 season.
