The Golden State Warriors want to extend Brandin Podziemski’s contract. General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. confirmed the team’s intentions during a conference call with local media.
“When he’s on the court, we’re a better team. So anytime you’ve got a guy like that, you want to be able to keep him around,” the GM said. “Obviously, we have multiple ways to do it through an extension and restricted free agency and all that, but we prefer to get it done sooner rather than later.”
Podziemski finished his third NBA season averaging 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 45% from the field, 37% from three-point range and 79% from the free-throw line.
According to Marc Stein, the Warriors are also interested in adding at least one player in free agency, with Georges Niang, Brandon Williams and Dalen Terry among the players being monitored.
Golden State currently has just under $216 million committed to 13 standard contracts, and the team could decide to wait until next offseason to address both Podziemski’s extension and Stephen Curry’s extension.
That approach could leave the Warriors with around $50 million in total salary commitments, giving them significant cap flexibility to build around Curry and maximize the final years of his career.
