Virtus Bologna was not fined for its move to EuroCup

The club indeed has applied formally to join the BCL in 2019-2020, but then decided to withdraw and by doing so, they committed a violation of the BCL Regulations

Today, a news came out on “Il Resto del Carlino” that Virtus Bologna was fined by FIBA for 250.000 € because of the club’s decision to join EuroCup, after they won the Basketball Champions League in 2018-2019.

The transparency of the Basketball Champions League allows everyone to easily access the Regulations of the competition (http://www.championsleague.basketball/19-20/regulations.pdf). Going to page 6 of 49, article 4, you can easily read about the “Admission Process” that regulates the competition, which also includes sanctions for clubs that have signed an Admission Form and then decided to withdraw from the BCL. This rule is applied to every club and is meant to protect the competition, preventing the clubs from applying formally and then withdrawing.
The situation of Virtus Bologna depends on a violation of this principle: the club indeed has applied formally to join the BCL in 2019-2020, but then decided to withdraw and by doing so, they committed a violation of the BCL Regulations.

In addition to that, it must be noted that this rule, that all the clubs are aware of and that everyone can access and read at any time, is completely unrelated to the clubs’ future decisions: the clubs are sanctioned only for their infringements to the BCL Regulations, not at all because of their choices to join other competitions.
