Il Resto del Carlino takes stock of Virtus Bologna’s preseason preparations, with the team having started working at the Porelli ahead of the new season. The group is still reduced due to the numerous players involved with their respective national teams. Among those absent are not only the players: head coach Alex Mumbrù is also coaching Germany, while Francesco Olivo, Virtus’ scouting director, is working as a video and advanced statistics analyst with France. Roberto Molina and Jorge Alvarez Sierra are also in Germany with Mumbrù.
The newspaper highlights how little time Virtus have to absorb Mumbrù’s new tactical ideas. New captain Daniel Hackett has stressed the need to adapt quickly, with the word “run” seemingly best representing the new era in Bologna.
On the national-team front, several Virtus players have already made an impact. Aliou Diarra scored 10 points and grabbed 3 rebounds in Mali’s loss to Ivory Coast. Bobi Klintman also made a solid start with Sweden, recording 5 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in the win over Finland. Marcus Carr, meanwhile, starred for Canada, finishing the victory over Panama with 15 points and 12 assists.
Mumbrù’s Germany defeated the Netherlands and will face Poland on August 30. Tommaso Baldasso and Francesco Ferrari are representing Italy, which will face Bosnia and Serbia. Olivo’s France defeated Slovenia and will next take on Sweden.
Il Resto del Carlino also reports that Virtus will play their first preseason game on September 3 in Rimini, while the second phase of the season-ticket campaign will begin on Monday, August 31. Meanwhile, anticipation continues to grow for the announcement of the new title sponsor, which will accompany Virtus in both the Italian league and EuroLeague during the club’s centenary season.
