The Spanish coach will lead the Italian club while also keeping his role with the German national team

Virtus Bologna have officially announced the appointment of Alex Mumbrú as head coach of the first team.

Born in Barcelona on June 12, 1979, Mumbrú had a long playing career with Joventut Badalona, Real Madrid and Bilbao Berri, winning, among other titles, one Spanish championship, one ULEB Cup and one EuroCup. With the Spanish national team, he won medals at the Olympics, World Cup, EuroBasket and Mediterranean Games.

His coaching career started at Bilbao Berri, where he had spent the final nine seasons of his playing career. He later coached Valencia Basket before taking over the German national team, leading it to a historic gold medal at EuroBasket 2025 in Latvia.

“I am excited to start this new adventure on the bench of one of the most historic clubs in Europe,” Mumbrú said. Virtus also thanked the German Federation for allowing him to hold a double role with both the national team and the Bologna club.
