Wendell Moore Jr., Virtus Bologna’s newest addition, spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview by Luca Aquino on the eve of the team’s Supercoppa debut against Olimpia Milano.
On the rivalry with Milano, in his first European experience.
“It’s one of the first things they told me. I love the atmosphere of these games, playing in front of a big crowd, it reminds me of the Duke-North Carolina rivalry. We’ve worked hard to be ready.”
On Alex Mumbrù’s system, based on a high pace and taking shots in the first seconds of the possession.
“It’s a lot of fun to play this way, we want to defend hard because that will allow us to run, we’re young and strong, we have plenty of energy. The role Mumbrù has given me? He told me to defend hard and run. We’ve talked about many things, I have to bring leadership because of my NBA experience, I’ll have to adapt to a new style of basketball but there are veterans like Hackett and Alston who help me a lot.”
On his relationship with Matt Morgan, who attended the same high school.
“We’ve been friends since I was 8-9 years old, he’s like an older brother to me. When this opportunity came up, I immediately called him and he only had great things to say about Bologna. It’s like a second home to him and he made my choice easy.”
On his first EuroLeague experience.
“There’s a very high level of physicality, but the game is changing here too, it’s getting faster and there are a lot of points being scored. I’ve spoken to many friends who play here, they prepared me for what I’m going to face and I can’t wait to become part of European culture. Returning to the NBA after my time in Bologna? I just want to give everything I have to this city. I play for Virtus and I take it very seriously, I’m happy to be here and we’ll see what happens.”
