Victor Wembanyama said he suffered a knee hyperextension during the San Antonio Spurs’ thrilling 134–132 victory over the New York Knicks on Wednesday night, but does not believe the injury is serious.
Wembanyama briefly exited the game in the fourth quarter after appearing to be in discomfort, but remained on the bench with his teammates for the remainder of the contest. Following the game, the Spurs star explained that he will undergo further medical testing on Thursday as a precaution.
“I was this close to coming back in the game,” Wembanyama said. “They had to hold me back. It was just a hyperextension, so it should be minimal. We’ve got to do everything tomorrow still to check that everything’s OK.”
Despite the scare, Wembanyama expressed optimism about his availability, saying he expects to be ready for San Antonio’s next game.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson echoed that sentiment, indicating that the early signs were encouraging.
“I haven’t been able to talk to the medical staff yet, but I think I saw what everybody else saw,” Johnson said. “Obviously, he finished the game on the bench with his teammates, and that made me feel good” as written by ESPN.
