Tomas Van Den Spiegel, ULEB President, talked to The Athletic during “The Ornstein & Chapman Podcast”, where the concept of a Super League in football was discussed.

“The goal should be to make the (financial) cake bigger in basketball, but at the moment it’s staying the same size. All that is happening is that the big clubs are getting bigger pieces while everyone else is getting less. The goal should be to make the cake bigger and to make sure everyone gets more.”
“We’re not against financial gain or building the sport. But we need to realize it’s not just the top clubs. There’s a pyramid underneath that could suffer, especially in Europe.”
Will the big teams ever ask to just leave their domestic leagues?
“They don’t have the guts to do that. They know they couldn’t defend that to their local markets and their local fans.”
“We have talked to different sports, to see where our cases meet and align our positions. We want what is the best for the sport and our belief is the national leagues are integral to this. The Super League concept will keep coming back to the table, but we need to find an integrated model that respects international club competitions, national leagues and national team competitions. There is room for all three to co-exist, we just need to find the right model.”
