Valerio Bianchini unveiled the new Rome project in an interview with Il Fatto a Spicchi. Below are the comments from the legendary coach and executive regarding the Rome team backed by Nelson and Doncic.
On the team’s name:
“Roma Basket Club. There might be a suffix, a nickname, following the American tradition. But since we don’t want to do something overly Americanized, it’s also possible that it will simply remain Roma Basket Club. It’s still under consideration. In any case, on June 25 there will be the official presentation and you will be invited. The team colors and jerseys will also be unveiled.”
On the head coach:
“My absolute favorite would be Luca Banchi, but he is the national team head coach. We have to see whether the coach will come from the American or the European basketball environment. In the end, it will probably be an Italian who knows the landscape well. But remember Dan Peterson: before coming here he had an experience in Chile, yet he was still American. And what a coach he turned out to be…”
On the plans for next season:
“We will immediately play in Italy’s top division. On June 25 we will present the entire project; there isn’t much time left now. I accepted this role not only because of the NBA Europe dream, but also because of the opportunity to contribute to the development of basketball in a city, Rome, that has given me so much. I hope there can be broad cooperation with Virtus Roma.”
