Tristan Thompson credited Rich Paul with helping him secure a five-year, $82 million contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland initially offered four years and $52 million, but Paul advised Thompson to reject the proposal and bet on improving his value.
Paul publicly demanded the maximum deal, then worth $90 million over five years, to increase Cleveland’s offer. Thompson became so committed to that figure that he initially resisted the $82 million proposal before Paul told him their negotiating strategy had worked.
According to Thompson, Paul understood that the Cavaliers could not easily replace him and framed the contract as part of the cost of pursuing a championship. The approach ultimately earned Thompson $30 million more than Cleveland’s original offer.
