Trey Kaufman-Renn seeks sixth year of NCAA eligibility after being drafted by Timberwolves

The former Purdue standout and Minnesota Timberwolves draft pick has taken his eligibility case to court in an attempt to return to college basketball for another season.

Trey Kaufman-Renn is seeking legal approval to play a sixth NCAA season after completing five years at Purdue. He redshirted during the 2021-22 campaign and subsequently appeared in 147 games between the 2022-23 and 2025-26 seasons.

Kaufman-Renn was selected by Minnesota in the 2026 NBA Draft

Kaufman-Renn entered the professional pathway after the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the 29th pick of the second round in the 2026 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-9 forward later suited up in five NBA Summer League games for Minnesota.

However, his NBA future has yet to be finalized. Kaufman-Renn has not signed a standard NBA contract, a two-way deal or a training camp contract.

Trey Kaufman-Renn challenges NCAA eligibility rules

The forward’s legal move comes as multiple cases are being brought before courts around the country over NCAA eligibility rules and the possibility of granting certain players an additional season.

Kaufman-Renn’s attorney, Mickey Weber, has stressed that his client does not want to miss out on the opportunity to return to college. In a court brief, Weber argued that Kaufman-Renn is not asking to receive something that the previous rules denied him, but instead does not want to be «the one person left outside» a benefit the NCAA has extended to other players.

Weber further argues that preventing every Division I school from competing for Kaufman-Renn’s services amounts to a restraint of trade under Indiana law.
