Towards Greece–Turkey, early clash between Spanoulis and Ataman about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s fouls

Towards Greece–Turkey, early clash between Spanoulis and Ataman about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s fouls.

Greece–Turkey will be one of the two EuroBasket 2025 semifinals, and tensions are already rising between the sides. Vassilis Spanoulis has responded to statements made by Ergin Ataman regarding alleged uncalled fouls by Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Turkish national team coach had claimed that referees protect the Milwaukee Bucks star too much, arguing that Antetokounmpo often commits offensive fouls and at times even unsportsmanlike fouls. Below are coach Spanoulis’ remarks.

Spanoulis said: “Well, we expected Coach Ataman to say these things. But Ataman is a great coach, he’s been doing this for many years: trying to influence people’s minds.

I don’t think Giannis has committed many offensive fouls in this tournament that were left uncalled. The ones he did commit, were whistled. And many fouls that weren’t even fouls were called against him. For example, in the game against Spain, he was called for an offensive foul that wasn’t there, which turned out to be very critical for the outcome of the game.”
