The situation between Thomas Walkup and Olympiacos continues to become more complicated and appears to have entered an even more delicate phase. At the center of the dispute is the 33-year-old’s desire to end his relationship with the Greek club, despite his contract remaining valid until next summer.
According to Michalis Stefanou of Betarades, Walkup has reportedly reached an agreement with Dubai Basketball without first asking for and receiving permission from Olympiacos. The offer from the UAE club is reportedly worth €3 million gross per year, a figure that would be subject to normal taxation if transferred elsewhere.
The player is also reportedly handling the matter almost entirely on his own. He has hired a lawyer in Italy and, according to Stefanou, has also sidelined his own representatives after they attempted to dissuade him from entering into a direct confrontation with Olympiacos.
Walkup has reportedly cut contact with his teammates and people within the organization for some time, while maintaining an uncompromising stance even toward Georgios Bartzokas. From a basketball standpoint, the coach would not want to let the American guard leave, but at the same time, he has no intention of keeping him against his will.
