Thomas Walkup’s move from Olympiacos to Dubai Basketball came with a significant financial investment, although the figures appear to be lower than initially reported in Greece.
According to BasketNews, the buyout fee was around €1.55 million, with Walkup himself covering half of the amount. His new contract is reportedly worth approximately €2.15 million gross per year. Initial reports in Greece had placed the buyout at €2.3 million and his annual salary close to €3 million.
Those are still superstar-level figures for a player whose value comes primarily from elite defense, leadership and his ability to make those around him better, rather than from being a go-to offensive star capable of changing games on his own.
