Spain is known as one of the strongest basketball nations in the world. But what they have done this summer at the national team level with the team reaching the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Final is hard to fathom.
Spain have participated in nine competitions this summer and played in the title game for each event – winning at the FIBA U18 European Championship 2022, FIBA U20 European Championship 2022 and FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship 2022.
They finished second at the FIBA U16 European Championship 2022, FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022, FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship 2022, FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 and FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship 2022.
“I don’t know if we can realise the dimension of this number. Every single competition Spain put a team in the Final. Which means that there is a lot of work put behind it,” Spain senior national team coach Sergio Scariolo said after they booked their ticket for the EuroBasket Final versus France.
“We can be really, really proud of the whole thing we have created because these nine Finals don’t happen by themselves. This is many, many years of hard work and we are happy to show our values and be a team.”
