Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was released Thursday after appearing in U.S. District Court in Portland on wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges tied to a federal illegal gambling investigation.
The 49-year-old Hall of Famer, who will next appear in New York on Nov. 24, agreed to travel restrictions, surrendered his passport, and is barred from gambling. Billups is among 34 defendants, including Terry Rozier and Damon Jones, accused of involvement in illegal poker operations allegedly connected to New York’s crime families.
Attorney Chris Heywood called Billups “a man of integrity,” vowing to “fight these allegations with the same tenacity that marked his career.” Prosecutors link him to a co-conspirator who tipped off bettors that Portland would rest players before a March 2023 game.
