The controversy stirred up by Slovenia over Olimpia Milano’s “no” to Vlatko Cancar and Josh Nebo joining the national team ahead of EuroBasket 2025 continues.
Speaking to Meridian Sport, Slovenia head coach Aleksander Sekulic gave a lengthy interview in which, among various topics, he addressed the situation involving Cancar and Nebo, calling out Olimpia Milano.
Sekulic’s words: “We are satisfied, especially with the group and the motivation of the players. We are less satisfied, however, with the fact that some players were not allowed to come and play. I’m talking about Čančar and Nebo, whom the club did not allow to participate with Slovenia, despite their great desire to be here. On one hand, it’s a big blow; on the other, we must seize the opportunity to give space to younger players. These decisions have greatly changed our plans. We gathered on July 23, and Cančar told me two days earlier that he couldn’t come because the club said he did not pass their medical tests. A month earlier, we had spoken and he was highly motivated, eager to play for the national team. Interestingly, a year ago he was in worse physical condition, and Denver still allowed him to play in the Olympic qualifiers. Now he’s in great shape, so this is really strange.”
On Josh Nebo: “I know he had a tough season due to injuries. He didn’t play much, but we had assurances that he was healthy and ready. However, the club said he isn’t, that he needs to recover. He himself said the club does not allow him to play and that he didn’t want to create problems”.
