The most interesting battle, also in view of NBA Europe, could be the one in the stands. As reported by Corriere della Sera in an article by Marco Bonarrigo, the future of the two Roman teams will not be decided on the court alone. Maxima Roma and Roma SPQR will compete not only for results and sporting ambitions, but also for the support of the capital’s fans.
Rome has a long basketball tradition and in 1983 set the record for attendance at a league game, with 14,348 paying spectators. Now Roman fans will once again have two teams to choose from, with the main question being which one will manage to win over the city’s basketball audience.
Both clubs arrive in Serie A with significant investments of close to €10 million, according to the newspaper, which retraces the steps that brought the two teams to the capital. SPQR acquired Vanoli Cremona’s league license and can count on figures such as Donnie Nelson, Luka Doncic, Sergio Scariolo and Valerio Bianchini, while Alessandro Magro will be the head coach. The team will play at the PalaTiziano while awaiting the installation of a roof over the Tennis Center.
Maxima Roma, meanwhile, transferred Brescia’s league license to the capital and is owned by Paul Matiasic, who also owns Trieste. Matteo Cotelli will be the head coach, while the team will play and practice at the PalaEur, with an investment of around €4 million per season in the venue.
With two ambitious projects and the return of high-level basketball to the capital, the question now is which of the two teams will attract the largest following. A battle that could also have an impact on the future of basketball in Rome and the potential development of the NBA Europe project.
