Taj Gibson is stepping away from his playing career to join the Chicago Bulls’ coaching staff as one of Tiago Splitter’s assistants.
The 41-year-old big man spent 17 seasons battling in the NBA. He played his first seven and a half seasons with the Bulls before making several stops, reuniting with coach Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota and New York.
Over the last four seasons, the former USC standout saw his playing time decrease as he increasingly took on a mentoring role for younger players.
Below is Gibson’s message announcing his retirement:
Today is a very emotional day for me.
After 17 seasons in the NBA, I can honestly say I gave this game everything I had.
Basketball gave me the opportunity to live a dream. As a kid from Brooklyn, NY, I was lucky to get a chance to display my talent on the biggest stage. From… pic.twitter.com/tQAgHoUYl6
