Sylvain Francisco has explained to L’Équipe the reasons behind his quick departure from ASVEL. The guard joined the French club after an outstanding season with Zalgiris Kaunas, but budget issues ultimately scaled back a project that was expected to include Nick Weiler-Babb, Armoni Brooks and Daniel Theis.
“When we realized ASVEL would need time to finalize its budget, I told my agents: ‘We have to leave,’” Francisco told L’Équipe. The French international nevertheless praised Tony Parker’s handling of the situation, stressing that some circumstances were beyond his control.
Francisco also revealed that at least five or six NBA teams showed interest in him. An opportunity with the Chicago Bulls fell through while the league waited for LeBron James’ decision: after his July 20 deadline to leave ASVEL passed, the guard decided to remain in Europe and sign with Panathinaikos.
